Grab your oversized hats and get ready to watch the Kentucky Derby! First held in 1875 and now a longstanding annual tradition, the Derby takes place on the first Saturday of each May. But if you’re a long shot from the Bluegrass State, don’t worry; you don’t have to attend the famous “race for the roses” at Churchill Downs to enjoy the afternoon. Simply prepare a spread of Southern comfort foods, plus a classic mint julep!
This easy cocktail recipe will be a hit for anyone who loves bourbon. It requires just three ingredients (if you don’t count the ice): mint, simple syrup, and bourbon!
To make this drink like they do at the Derby, grab a wooden meddler to release the aroma from the mint, then serve it up in a traditional silver julep cup—it makes for a cute presentation and keeps your drink ice cold.
To truly replicate this signature drink, serve it over a heaping mound of crushed ice with a bouquet of fresh mint. It’s perfect for spring!
Ingredients:
Way of preparation
Step 1
Remove the leaves from one sprig of mint and place in a mint julep cup or rocks glass with the simple syrup.
Step 2
Using a wooden meddler, gently muddle to release the aroma and flavor of the mint leaves, about 20 seconds.
Step 3
Add the bourbon to the glass, then fill with crushed ice. Stir well to combine, until the sides of the glass are icy, about 20 seconds.
Step 4
Bundle the remaining three sprigs of mint together and slap them on the back of your hand.
Step 5
Stick the mint into the ice to create a mint bouquet on the side of your glass.
